When They Say Turn the Other Cheek

Retail is hell,
everybody knows that.

My soul is a cannibal
or maybe I’m just tired,
my eyes stinging with smoky air
from Californian wildfires.

Children take books from shelves
and leave them on the floor.

Outside a tourist fights with his wife,
“Why do you want to go in a bookstore?”
he shouts into thick air.
